My hope is that the journal helps expecting moms feel less alone and supports them in their emotional and spiritual quest over 40 weeks.

Excerpt from “Rooted: The Inward Path to Motherhood”

I created this workbook in my own journal while I was pregnant with my first child because I wanted a place to record my inner transformation over the course of 40 weeks. While physical growth is very obvious during pregnancy, I found myself intrigued by the emotional and spiritual growth I was experiencing. I longed for a resource that would help me explore the subtle and momentous shifts happening within.

For me, pregnancy revealed itself as a great teacher that was as much about death as about new life. It contained rich lessons about shadows and blessings, fear and joy. I learned that pregnancy can be as complex as life itself and as different as each person is unique.

In a constantly evolving landscape of family and gender roles as well as social media pressures, I’ve found that rooting into my own experience and definitions of motherhood have been both calming and rewarding.

This workbook is laid out in a weekly format to help guide your own personal inquiry, with plenty of free space to express your individual experience. I’ve included words of wisdom from mothers of different backgrounds who inspire me as well as tips that I’ve learned along the way. Note that I use the term “mother” here to refer to the birthing person. I use the term “partner” to be inclusive of all types of relationships, identities and genders.

My greatest hope is that you make this journal your own. Use the sections that feel most supportive for your discovery process and don’t stress about completing the prompts in a certain timeframe or order. Use the dream log in the back of the journal to record interesting dreams or thoughts that you’d like to remember. Doodle, write and draw on any blank pages or areas as you wish.

Remember, this journal is about YOU.

With love, Dorothee Sophie Royal
